A rule conflict happens when two rules in a class disagree, for example one blocks YouTube and another allows it. When this happens, the rule already in place keeps working, so students' access doesn't change until you decide which rule you want.
Check whether a class has a conflict
In the class toolbar, select Rules. If the class has a conflict, a warning icon appears on the Active Rules tab.
In the Rule lists section, find the list with a warning icon next to its name.
To see the rule that isn't applying, select the arrow next to the list name. The rule appears grayed out with an Overridden label.
Why conflicts happen
A conflict can appear when:
You apply a list: A rule in the list disagrees with a class-specific rule or a rule from a list applied earlier.
A list changes elsewhere: The list's owner changed it in their Rules Library, and the change disagrees with a rule in this class. The conflict appears the next time you open the class.
A co-teacher applies a list: In a shared class, a co-teacher's list disagrees with a list you applied, or the other way around.
In each case, the higher-priority rule keeps working. Rules from the same list that don't conflict still apply. For the full order, see Rule priority in Classroom Manager.
Resolve a conflict
Choose the option that gives students the access you want. You don't have to resolve a conflict right away. If you do nothing, the current rule keeps working and the warning icons stay.
Create a class-specific rule
Create a class-specific rule when you want to decide access for this class only. Class-specific rules apply before rules from any list, so your lists stay the same in your other classes.
To create a class-specific rule, in the Active Rules tab, select Create Rule.
Change or delete the class-specific rule
If a class-specific rule is overriding a list rule, change or delete it in the Class-specific rules section:
To change it, select Block or Allow next to the rule.
To delete it, select Delete (trash icon) next to the rule. The list rule then applies.
Remove one of the lists from the class
If two lists conflict, remove the one you don't need in this class. Next to the list, select Remove. This doesn't change the list in your Rules Library or in other classes.
Edit the list in your Rules Library
To fix the conflict everywhere, remove or change the conflicting rule in the list itself. You can only edit lists you own.
In the class, select the Rules Library tab.
Next to the list, select Edit (pencil icon).
Change or remove the conflicting rule, then select Save.
Warning
Changes to a list apply to every class where the list is active.
